Health insurance claim denial recourse or when you shouldn’t take “no” for an answer

Written by Daniel Phillips on December 24, 2010 – 7:34 pm

Anyone who’s had health insurance for any length of time is pretty familiar with all of the rules, steps, and hoops you have to go through to get coverage. Suffice to say, insurance companies don’t necessarily make the process an easy one. But once you’ve found a provider on your insurance plan, made an appointment and had your visit, most of us would feel safe in assuming our health insurance would pay for the health service. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

The story of a health insurance claim denial

A story from Reuters tells how a writer saw a nutritionist to help her deal with her dangerously high cholesterol; the nutritionist was an approved provider of her Empire BlueCross BlueShield plan. When the bill came due, the insurance company decided the cholesterol issue wasn’t a complicating medical condition, and as a result, the writer was on her own for payment.

Don’t just take ‘no’ for an answer

This isn’t an unusual incident, sadly, but many people don’t think to double check if a visit is covered.

First Time International Travelers Trust International Medical Insurance

Written by Daniel Phillips on December 24, 2010 – 2:03 am

Getting ready to travel abroad for the first time can be overwhelming. Getting your documentation in order, learning about your travel destination, reading up on travel advisories, and arranging for accommodations is more than enough to keep you busy. But during your preparations, make sure you do not forget to purchase international medical insurance.

Whether you are traveling abroad on a personal vacation or for business purposes, there are a variety of health risks you may encounter. Being fatigued from your flight and then being exposed to a new environment can often lead to illness, as can factors like poor water conditions, altitude changes, and new cuisine. And injuries can happen when you least expect them to, including car accidents and falls.

The insurance policy that protects you in your home country will likely be of no help in these situations. Why is that? Because most group health insurance policies apply only to the countries in which they are issued. Read more…

Does home insurance cover snow damage?

Written by Kathryn Flores on December 23, 2010 – 4:42 pm

Although a white Christmas is picture perfect, the snow leads to a flurry of insurance claims – especially burst pipes and cars crashing on icy roads.

Does insurance cover snow damage?

For our customers, the good news is that our second home insurance covers loss or damage caused by the weight of snow. However, there are some exclusions – domestic outbuildings etc. see the policy wording.

Our experience is that not all policies offer this cover. Some insurers are covering snow damage under the “storm” provision on a buildings policy. However, most insurers aren’t covering damage caused by the weight of snow unless the policy includes accidental damage to buildings.

In all cases where you have damage, call your insurer to establish exactly what’s covered. It’s import

Drivers in UK Could Face Unexpected Rise in Auto Insurance Rates

Written by Melissa Baker on December 23, 2010 – 12:59 am

UK motorists already pay some of the highest auto insurance rates in the industrialized world. And if some motorists across the pond get their wishes fulfilled by Father Christmas, they may wind up paying an even higher price for car insurance.

UK Insurance Customers, Take Note

Like their counterparts in the USA, UK drivers can be very attached to their motorcars – and like their cousins in the former colonies, often delight in making modifications to their vehicles. Such modifications may simply be cosmetic, such as alloy or chrome wheels, custom exhaust, lower suspension, fender flares or adding a spoiler. The British motor sport fan may also wish to add a turbocharger or intercooler (although why anyone living in a country where petrol is the equivalent of $10 USD per gallon would want to is a mystery).

However, even simply cosmetic modifications to a vehicle may result in a car insurance price hike of over £600 (approximately $1800 USD) per year.

Why?

Even in the U.S., if a motorist makes modifications to a vehicle, s/he can – and probably will – receive a higher bill from their car insurance company. UK ins
