Should you allow your kid to take your car back to campus?

Written by Daniel Phillips on February 1, 2011 – 7:45 am

Your college student came home for the holidays, and wanted to take the car back to campus. Before you send you agree, here are a few things to consider.

Away at school auto insurance discount

If your child’s school is a significant distance from home, you could save money by keeping the car at home. Many auto insurance companies offer an “away at school” discount if a child rated on your policy is away at college. There are some distance restrictions; with my current insurance carrier the college has to be at least 120 miles away from home. My daughter qualified, but my son did not.

Garaging address

You should also have the vehicle rated at its new garaging address. You could save money if rates in the area your child attends school are lower than rates where you live. For example, I live in a major metropolitan area, but when my son went to school, the town he was in was much smaller and offered lower car insurance rates.

Beware of other drivers

No, I don’t mean the other drivers on the road.

Don’t be snowed- if you cause a crash, you are at fault

Written by Daniel Phillips on January 29, 2011 – 5:09 am

When a news reporter quips, “The accident is being blamed on the recent snow storm…” it always gets a chuckle out of me. If you are in an accident, and did the hitting, you are at fault. Road conditions certainly play a role in many accidents, but it is up to you as the driver to adapt to those conditions and safely operate your car. The snow may contribute to your accident, but it was caused by you over-driving the conditions and losing control of your vehicle.

Driving in winter poses many special challenges. If you live in the northern part of the country, it is dark when you leave for work and dark when you head home. Storms can down trees and power lines, making your normal route impassable and forcing detours. Even a little snow can cause big headaches, from traffic snarls to major accidents. As a result, you need to take precautions when the weather changes.

Winter driving precautions

Before winter hits, make sure you have properly inflated tires with good tread. If you live where it snows often, make the investment in dedicated winter tires. O

Holiday shopping season a smashing success for car prowlers.

Written by Daniel Phillips on January 12, 2011 – 10:20 am

I went to a local “Black Friday” shopping event for a great buy on a trampoline. I don’t care how much money I could save on a Christmas gift, I will never, ever, go through that again! However, thousands and thousands of shoppers will spend the next few weeks searching for the perfect gifts, and thousands and thousands of thieves will spend the next few weeks breaking into cars to steal them. ‘Tis the season, indeed.

Christmas gifts left in cars are easy pickings for car prowlers. Shoppers often drop packages off in the car, and return to the mall to continue shopping or have lunch. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to make off with a morning’s shopping haul.

Plan to protect your car and loot

You can avoid this problem with a little planning:

  • See if the stores you shop in will hold your purchases for you, then pick everything up at one time when your shopping day is over.
  • Call for back-up and have a family member or friend meet you at the mall for a package pick-up so you don’t store anything in your car.
