J1 visa holders are required by the United States government to have valid J1 visa insurance, or exchange student insurance, for the time period covering their exchange program.

Valid exchange student insurance covers J1 visa holders for at least $50,000 worth of medical benefits per accident or illness, as well as repatriation. J1 visa holders should check their insurance policy carefully to make sure it is underwritten by a reputable insurance company and that it includes coverage for risks arising from normal activities on the exchange program.
