Holiday home oil theft warning

Holiday home owners are being warned to secure their heating oil following an increase in oil thefts. Thieves are targeting heating oil at rural holiday cottages as prices and demand soar. If your heating fails, check if your tank has been drained.

Protect your tank

Police are advising holiday home owners to ensure their fuel is secure. Fit padlocks, lockable cages or alarms to your tank that create an alert if the oil level suddenly drops or if the tank is tampered with. Where possible install security lighting, plant shrubs or install fences to hide your tank from view. If your oil is stolen consider installing CCTV as a future deterant.

It’s essential to check your tank’s oil levels on a regular basis – especially during the winter. If your oil runs out and you are unable to heat your holiday home, turn off the water supply at the mains and drain the water system to prevent burst pipes.

If your oil is stolen or tank is damaged as a result of oil theft, contact your holiday cottage insurance provider. A comprehensive policy should cover oil theft.
