The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for ice and snow in the UK. Consequently, a new wave of burst pipe insurance claims is likely.

There are fears that this winter will see a repeat of last year’s unprecedented levels of holiday home insurance water damage claims, caused by burst pipes during the cold snap. With the average burst pipe claim costing thousands (six figures in some instances), it’s essential to take precautions.

It’s important that holiday home owners understand their insurance obligations with regard to preventing bursts at their second homes. Do you have to heat the property, turn the water off and drain the heating system?

As a policyholder you have a responsibility to take due care and reasonable steps to prevent loss or damage. If you do not take the required precautions or are negligent, then cover could be void.

Many burst pipe claims can be avoided.

  • Take precautions to protect your holiday home from burst pipes
  • Should the worst happen, follow our advice: what to do when pipes freeze or burst.
