Say no to suffering from allergies
Written by Lindsay Torres on December 9, 2010 – 8:03 amAllergies are the pits. I’m not talking about allergies to food, I’m talking about sneezing, watery eyes, red nose kind of allergies. And if you are like me, they happen all year long. It is worse in the winter because everyone thinks I am sick. But not, I am just allergic to you, thank you very much.
If you have year long allergies, it is almost impossible to know your triggers because it can be more than one thing. But you are not alone. Web MD states that 1 out of every 5 Americans suffers from allergies. That is 20 percent!
You have two options: continue to suffer or do something about it. If you fall into the latter category, you are way ahead of me. My allergies were a late in life onset, not until I was around 20 years old. One summer I was miserable; sneezing all the time and having to keep a box of tissues nearby at all times. It was ridiculous. It came to a head when I went to a wedding in Arizona. My allergies went bezerk. I was sneezing constantly, dripping at inappropriate times and I fell asleep on the floor. I heard the wedding was nice, but my allergy medicine had me a bit doped.
You would think this would have made me realize I had a problem. I went to a beautiful trip to Yellowstone for a family reunion. The minute we were there my allergies got the better of me. Determined not to drip the entire time, I took the advise of my brother in law who has his own pharmacy (but is not an actual doctor). I took whatever pills he “prescribed” to me. Needless to say, I was conked out. The minute we would get in the car I would fall asleep and I was in bed every night at 9 p.m.
So allergy medicine obviously does not work for me. I kept on seeing ads for allergy tests and drops that would heal you from your allergy woes. I never thought I could afford the drops because I had very cheap health insurance. An allergist can test you to find out which specific allergens you are allergic to. How it works is the allergist pricks you with a needle (yikes) that has each type of allergen on it and he or she sees how your skin reacts to each one. Once you determine that, you can decide how to relieve your allergy troubles. One option is the allergy shot. With the same idea as a vaccine, you are injected with whatever you are allergic to so your body can build up an immunity to it. You have to go in more than once to get it, however. Another option is the allergy drops (my personal fave). You are given 12 or so little dropper bottles, each with a different allergen in them. The idea is the same as the shot, as you use the drops, your body becomes immune to the allergen. Each dropper is used for 10 days with an increase of drops each night. The drops are put under your tongue for maximum absorption for two minutes. The downside to the drops: you have to remember them everyday. The downside to the shot: it hurts and needles are scary.
Whichever works for you, do it. There is not need to continue to suffer from allergies.
