Fortune 500 Companies and Their Life Insurance Benefits
Written by Lindsay Torres on March 21, 2012 – 5:26 amFor employees of Fortune 500 companies, especially those in senior management positions, life insurance may be handled differently than it is for “average” people. One form of life insurance called COLI, or corporate-owned life insurance, has become very common for high-level executives, although it used to be reserved for low-paid workers.
COLI began to be commonly issued after World War II as a tax hedge for companies against the losses of key employees. A COLI policy could be issued on a president, vice-president, or CFO of a company, and although the premiums were not tax-deductible, the proceeds of the policy were. This allowed a company not only to insure the lives of important persons employed by the business, but to enjoy a tax advantage if the person died while employed.
By the 1950s, Fortune 500 companies had begun to realize that more than tax benefits at death could be gained from COLI policies. In

Bad Behaviour: Confessions of a perfect driver
Written by Lindsay Torres on March 14, 2012 – 1:49 pmOne in five drivers are perfect One in five. That’s how many drivers out there claim they’re perfect; no bad habits to speak of. Did you LOL when you read that too?
We have no idea; we’ve never seen one. But according to the survey, you’re more likely to see one in Quebec. Twenty-seven per cent of Quebec drivers claimed they had no bad habits. And oddly (to those who live outside of Ontario), Ontario drivers were the least boastful with only 15 per cent saying they were perfect.
Perfect driversn be found acrossnada apparently, just maybe not in your neighbourhood.
Maybe, maybe not; but clearly age plays a factor in a driver’s confidence. In fact, a driver’s belief in their perfection grew with age. Clearly, confidence is well instilled when a driver hits Freedom 55.
Women, more than men, feel they have no bad habits (at least none they were willing to admit to). At 20.7 per cent, women were more likely to say they were a perfect driver compared to men at 16.9 per cent. All wen say to that is, yes dear.

What’s that sound? It’s Masternaut, the car gadget that says you’re driving badly
Written by Lindsay Torres on March 1, 2012 – 2:18 amAs I turned the wheel to steer the car through the roundabout, there was a shriek and the flash of warning lights. Beside me, Wayne Gilbert smiled.
I had, apparently, steered too aggressively into the curve. The lights and the noise came from Masternaut, a new electronic device attached to the dashboard that is claimed to nudge you towards more careful, considerate driving – and to cut fuel bills by up to a fifth. When businesses have to justify every expense, and with fuel costs up 46% in real terms in the past five years, that is a saving not to be sniffed at.
Masternaut’s custom-fitted “black box” has a GPS for location, a gyroscopic and inertial system to detect turns and acceleration, and a data feed from the the microprocessor that controls the engine to detect revs and use.
Gilbert, chief technology officer at Masternaut, says the device could usher in the age of “ecodriving”: driven by near-real-time feedback not just to the driver, but also to managers back at base.
That does have its worrying side. N
